Turbina holubii (Baker) A.Meeuse

Family: CONVOLVULACEAE

Publication: Bothalia vi. 780 (1958)

Description

Most of the plant labelled as “Ipomoea holubii” (Turbina holubii) are indeed “Ipomoea bolusiana” and there remains a considerable confusion surrounding the true identity of this species among growers and caudiciform collectors.

The true Turbina holubii (Turbina holubii) is a shrub 0.8-2.50 meres high, many-stemmed from the base and much branched. Branches laying flat on the ground or climbing at the tips. Leaves deciduous ovate-cordate to circular-cordate, sometimes oblong cordate. Flowers are pink. The seed pods of all Turbina are distinguished by having leathery seedpods, and although some Ipomoea may have ‘leathery type’ pods, very leathery pods are a major feature of the genus Turbina.
