Yucca gloriosa var. variegata (Carrière) Carrière

Family: AGAVACEAE · Variety or form of Yucca gloriosa

Publication: Rep. (Annual) Missouri Bot. Gard. 13: 78 1902

Description

Yucca gloriosa ‘Aureovariegata’ is an evergreen perennials, shrub, with dense or loose rosettes of stiff, sword-shaped leaves striped and edged creamy-yellow and arguably the most attractive of all the selected cultivars within the genus. Bell-shaped cream flowers in upright spikes to 2 m in height appear in late summer and autumn. It will form a short unbranched trunk after many years, giving older plants a refined and exotic look. With age the trunk may branch lightly and spreads by offsets into groups to 1,5-2.5 metres tall by 1.5-2 metres wide.

Leaves: Rigid, very sharply pointed leaves, up to 60-90 cm long, and 5m wide, dark green, creamy-yellow-margined, fading to cream on older leaves. In the cooler months the plant will have visible pink to reddish overtones.

Blooming season: The tall flower panicles are produced mostly in mid to late summer or autumns although it is not uncommon to see some plants with emerging flower spikes at any time of year. The flowers last for several weeks.
