Astrophytum myriostigma cv. Onzuka cristata

Family: CACTACEAE · Cultivar of Astrophytum myriostigma

Description

Astrophytum myriostigma cv. Onzuka cristata is a rare Japanese cultivars that forms beautiful white textured crested stems. There are several clones that show different crested shapes.

Remarks: The cause of cristation: The cause of anomalous form of growth is not fully explained. Biologists disagree as to why some Astrophytum grow in this unusual form. Some speculate that it is a genetic mutation. Others say it is the result of a lightning strike or freeze damage, but whatever the stimulus, the growth point of the stem has switched from a geometric point, to a line, which folds and undulates as the crest expands. Though these crested cacti are somewhat rare (1 in 50,000 or less), cresting occurs naturally and can be encountered in many other cactus species.

Origin and Habitat

Japan, Garden origin (Nursery produced cultivar). The odd crested forms are extremely rare and may appear on seedling batches in a very small percentage.

Cultivation and Propagation

This cultivar is usually found as graftet plant, but it grows well on its own roots too. Keep well ventilated, as it is prone to root rot. Protect from frosts and freezes. Keep in half shade.

Propagation: Grafting (usually) or by cuttings that hard to root.
