Family: CACTACEAE · Variety or form of Eriosyce odieri

Publication: Cact. Fl. Silvestre Chile ed. 2 258 (-259; fig. 96b). 2004 [Dec 2004]

Description

Eriosyce odieri var. weisseri is a name used to describe a geographical form of Eriosyce odieri growing considerably further north than even Eriosyce esmeraldana. The species has a long carrot like root and is similar to both Eriosyce krausii and Eriosyce malleolata, but the differences are pretty subtle and they are not readily distinguishable if not for the geographical provenance. This Eriosyce is the more northern species of the of the Thelocephala group.

Origin and Habitat

Caleta Cifuncho, near the coast, Región de Antofagasta, Prov. Antofagasta, Chile.

Altitude range: Around 500 metres above sea level.

Habitat and ecology: Eriosyce odieri var. weisseri grows along the rocky and very arid coastline. The long tuberous root is buried deeply in these soils which are very poor in organic matter. In the area where these plants grow there is very little rain but frequent coastal fog, which provides a significant part of their water needs.

Cultivation and Propagation

It is a summer grower species. Easy to cultivate but somewhat rot prone if kept in a non ventilated place. Requires a very fast draining drying soil Water regularly in summer, but do not overwater.

Needs a full sun exposure (or light shade) Good heat tolerance. Hardy to at down to -5°C for brief periods.

Propagation: Usually propagated from Seeds. (seldom produces offsets)
